Bookcases and Wall Units in Solid Hardwood

Starting Point

We start with a floor plan, photos of the room and an idea of the desired objective. We then prepare some preliminary sketches and a site visit if necessary. The initial sketch is a tool to define the dimensions, the configuration and components. At this stage, modifications of the sketch are usual in the process of working out a satisfactory solution.  After this stage we can provide a quotation of the total cost based on the final sketch.

Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing

The next step is the creation of a virtual model that we construct using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. From this 3-D model we can produce detailed dimensioned drawings that accurately define the scope of work. Modifications at this stage may change the cost; increases due to added features, decrease by elimination of features, according to our pricing model.

We have examples in our showroom that demonstrate many of the options and materials as well as serve as representative examples of our craftsmanship.

Once agreement has been reached we will ask for a 50% deposit and signed construction documents that precisely detail the scope of work.

Combining Traditional and Modern Techniques

We use only locally sourced high grade hardwood. Our preferred species are cherry, walnut and oak. These woods are sourced mainly from Pennsylvania suppliers. All hardwoods that are harvested in the US are done so in a sustainable manner.

The initial process is very traditional; making panels from planks, cutting various rectilinear shapes, and preparatory sanding. The cutting of the constituent parts is performed on Computer and Numerically Controlled (CAM) machinery using proprietary software. The use of our CAD/CAM system provides several benefits; high accuracy, complete repeatability, high degree of customization and results in precise fit and finish.

Finishing Materials

We finish the well prepared wood surfaces with natural plant oils and beeswax. We use only finishing materials that are non-toxic to both the client and the craftsman.

Delivery

We deliver and install our work with our crew in our own truck. The craftsmen who worked on making the furniture are involved in the delivery and assembly and thus are intimately familiar with its assembly, construction and care.
