At Scott Jordan Furniture we make solid hardwood furniture, primarily from the prized American Black Cherry, but also from walnut, maple or oak. Our materials are sustainably harvested from Pennsylvania forests.
We value mortise and tenon joinery and dovetailed drawers; methods valued by our ancestors for their integrity and soundness.
We prefer to use oil/varnish finishes, polished with beeswax, to enhance the wood's natural beauty and to protect the the wood. Our methods are safe for both the craftspeople who make the furniture and our clients who bring it into their homes.
Our company began as a small furniture restoration business in Brooklyn, New York. Learning from the design and construction of well-built antiques, we began to build our own furniture. In 1989, having outgrown two previous workshops, we relocated our workshop to a site within the former Brooklyn Navy Yard. We have expanded several times at this location and today occupy more than 15,000 square feet of design and manufacturing space.
Over the years we have sought out advancements in woodworking technology that have enabled us to design and produce furniture of high quality and precision at a very reasonable cost. Our investments in computer assisted design and manufacturing have enabled us to produce solid wood furniture the old fashioned way: built to order, one piece at a time, at a quality standard that would make our ancestors proud.
Our equipment is modern, the materials and construction are traditional. We craft furniture that will endure for generations to come. We like to think that what we make today will, one day, become a prized antiquity.
We feel blessed to live in a part of the world that has an abundant supply of fine cabinet grade hardwood growing nearby. On your next air trip west from New York take a look down as you travel accross central and northern Pennsylvania. The forests of the Allegheny plateau, both private and public, are well managed for sustainability. From these magnificent tracts are harvested some of the world's most prized timbers.
